Alongside RSC taking London by storm, Edinburgh is very
much buzzing and it’s annual Fringe Festival is displaying some of the very
best (and also not so great) acts, performers and companies that have headed up
to Scotland to take part in the industry’s most coveted arts festival. Where
does that leave the rest of the theatre world during the exciting month of
August?
Well even with a busy few weeks hosting some kind of big
sporting event everyone has been going on about, London is still very much the
place to be for theatregoers too…
Opportunity of the week:
If you are aged 18-30 and are a budding actor, producer
or director, the applications for The Old Vic New Voices 24 Hour plays opened
last week, pending till 23rd August.
Excitingly, The Old Vic have extended the application age
from 18-25 to 18-30 presenting even more opportunities for eager theatre
practitioners to get involved.
The event takes place on 28th
October 2012 and involves the selected group writing, directing and performing

Cast announcements:
One of the longest running musicals in the West End
continues to go strong with new cast members joining Phantom of the Opera next month.
Marcus Lovett, previously seen in Les Miserables on Broadway and Whistle
Down the Wind in the West End takes on the role of the Phantom while Simon
Thomas, who most recently appeared in Legally
Blonde will play Raoul. Amongst the
females, we will see Lara Martins play Carlotta and Anna O’Byrne take on the
protagonist Christine.
The RSC’s Matilda
have also announced nearly a whole new cast starting in mid-August, and with
the success of the musical so far it will be interesting to see the title role
being taken on by four new girls entirely: Lucy-Mae Beacock, Hayley Canham,
Chloe Hawthorn and Lara Wollington.
Hollywood transfer:
It has been announced that the hit Broadway and West End
musical Jersey Boys is being adapted
for the big screen for release in 2013. Musical to film transfers have been a
very successful formula of the last few years with the likes of Mamma Mia! and Chicago raking in cinema audience numbers. Jon Favreau (Iron Man and Elf) will direct the film with an as of yet unannounced cast - but
the lead roles are being sourced through open casting calls in Los
Angeles.

opened on 8th August and runs till 15th September at the
Noël Coward Theatre. Soho Cinders by
Stiles and Drewe opened at Soho Theatre Main House on 3rd August and
runs till 9th September. Volcano
by Noel Coward opens on 16th August till 29th September
at The Vaudeville, and Carousel by Rodgers and Hammerstein
opens on 15th August till 15th September at the Barbican.
